Do you want something to do outside on a sunny winter day?
Why not try snowshoeing up at Silver Star Mountain or Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre? If you are not into skiing or other winter sports, snowshoeing is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air while taking in the beautiful views! Snowshoeing can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. You can take it slow, have some laughs and enjoy the scenery. Or you can push yourself and get your heart rate up. Want to challenge yourself? Try varying your pace from walking to a light jog.
Sovereign Lake and Silver Star
Both places offer maps that are available where you buy your trail pass. Each location offers extensive snowshoe trail systems that take you on winding tours through the snow-covered trees. With all the different trails it is rare that you come across another party, you will feel like you have the mountain to yourself.
Do your own thing
If you are looking for something a little more adventurous, you can also play around in the powder on your own. It can be quite tiring if you decide to leave the beaten path and try to create new trails in the fresh snow, but it so much fun to do the extra exploring. If you do plan to leave the marked routes, keep them in your sight or bring your GPS. It is a good idea to take turns breaking trail with your partner to avoid getting completely worn out!
Another exciting challenge on snowshoes is descending a hill or slope. Lean back a bit and take it slow, gravity will help you down, but you have to be prepared or you may lose your balance! We found that poles help for balance on packed trails but really don’t offer much for stability in the deep powder. If you are used to hiking with poles, give it a try when you snowshoe!
Close to Vernon and with the added bonus of restaurants in the Silver Star Village makes perfect for an afternoon of exploring the outdoors and a bite to eat afterwards. Grab some buddies, get out and enjoy what Vernon has to offer!
