What an amazing way to spend the day! As you may know, we get a bit socked in with the valley cloud in Vernon. One way to escape the doom and gloom of the winter months is to get up out of the clouds and visit Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. We went up to do some classic cross-country skiing, but if that isn’t your cup of tea, you could give skate skiing a go, or check out the snowshoe trails. No gear? No problem! Sovereign Lake has a rental shop where you can get the gear you need.
We pulled into a full parking lot in the morning. It’s great to see all the different folks taking advantage of what we have in our backyard. We got geared up and proceeded to our favourite trail, Carl Wylie Loop. It is a 7 km loop with some good little hills to get your blood pumping. The viewpoints off of Carl Wylie Loop are beautiful. The view looks like an ocean with the hilltops poking out to look like islands. As we were made our way around the loop we were surprised at how few people we saw, considering the full parking lot. It was like we had the park to ourselves. With exception of occasional skate skier blasting past us, we were on our own.
At one point as we were skiing along, we were serenaded by something clanging. As the couple passed us, they stopped for a quick chat and explained the clang was their tin can lunch banging off their pots inside their backpack. They were headed to the Black Prince cabin where they could sit by the wood stove and cook their food. The cabin is open to anyone who would like to stop for a bite to eat or drink their hot chocolate. On cooler days, you can stop in to warm your hands and toes, meet a few new people, and share stories of the day.The cabin is at a junction where if you hang a right and start climbing, you can make your way to the summit of Silver Star Mountain. I am sure that the views would be spectacular. If you make it, send us pictures!
Sovereign Lake is a great place to go the next time you are feeling the effects of the lack of sunshine. Grab your gear, hop in the car, make your way up to Sovereign Lake, and enjoy some of what Vernon has to offer!
